The Town of Clifton was born on April 21, 1868 with an act of the St. Lawrence County Board of Supervisors by taking the Townships of Clifton and Chaumont from the Town of Pierrepont. The first Town Board meeting was ordered to be held at the house owned by the Clifton Iron Company at Clarksboro (now Twin Falls) on the first Tuesday in June, 1868. On December 3, 1883, the Townships of Sherwood and Harewood were taken from the Town of Colton and annexed to the Town of Clifton. The Township of Clifton was taken from the Town of Clifton by the Act of 02 December 1897 when the Town of Clare was formed. This was when our Town achieved the shape and size it presently has. However, this also means that Clarksboro, the original seat of Town government, is no longer part of the Town of Clifton.
Interesting notes: The population of the town in 1870 was 221 (142 were native and 79 were foreign born). During the year ending September 30, 1872, the town contained one school district and employed one teacher. The number of school aged children was 50, with 37 attending school and the average attendance being 26. The amount expended for school purposes was $22.71. The value of the school house and site was $300.
A wealth of information can be found on Clifton's colorful history. Presently, the Town History Room (in the Community Center building in Cranberry Lake) is open to the public every "First Friday" of the month, from 10:00am to 2:00pm. The History Room is open other times by appointment. We would love to see more interest in our past!
